Anghiari, Palio della Vittoria On 29 June 1440 the flat which opens beneath the walls of Anghiari was the scene of the historic battle between the 'Milanese army, led by Niccolò Piccinino, and Florentine, allied with the Papal States and the Republic of Venice. The Battle of Anghiari was won by Florence and would surely have been forgotten by history if, in 1503, the magistrates of Florence had not entrusted with the task of Leonardo da Vinci paint to decorate the rooms of the Palazzo Vecchio. The painting was destroyed and unfortunately remained unfinished because an unexpected drying process, later replaced by the decorations of the Vasari.
In memory of the famous battle, the June 29 of each year, Anghiari commemorates the event with a solemn feast: the "Palio della Vittoria," a contest between representatives of neighboring municipalities runners along a path of 1400 meters, from the Chapel of Victory to Baldaccio Square. The event began in the late afternoon when Square Baldaccio gather the armed forces, musicians, set and flag bearers. At dusk the firing of the bombing starts the epic race that sees the prize, the prize that will adorn the Joint winner.
